Global Maritime Trends 2050 is a scroll-driven 3D microsite built by Economist Impact to support a research report commissioned by Lloyd's Register Foundation and Lloyd's Register. It turns the global research into four data-rich "what if" scenarios for the future of shipping and shows what each would mean for the industry.

I led the UX and UI design, devising a journey through time to 2050, told by imagined headlines and data. I also handled all of the 3D asset production, from initial design and art direction through to finished in-browser assets.

Explore the early globe look development prototype below. The idea of morning→night lighting and palettes was applied to differentiate the 4 scenarios. An exaggerated and slightly dystopian night palette was used for the most severe of the scenarios, providing a dramatic look.

UX design concepts explored how 3D could work together with the narrative and supporting data to tell a compelling story. The idea of location “slices” (bottom right) was considered as an alternative to the globe.
